Mistake:
Calling out in class without permission is a serious mistake. Often a student has the feeling that he/she has accomplished something good if what was called was correct. After all they knew the right answer, didn't they?

The real truth is that calling out usually takes the fun out of learning for most of the other students. They feel that nobody cares about their learning. They feel like any chance for participation in class has been stolen from them. Those other students feel "unfaired" against!

The damage to one's self:
1. We train ourselves to be insensitive to the feelings of others.
2. We may lose friends.
3. We may hurt our relationship with our teacher.
The damage to others:
1. We may cause others not to learn.
2. We may cause others not to enjoy learning.
3. We may prevent the teacher from teaching.
Sometimes a student calls out of turn to get attention and he/she really has nothing to say. This is the worst case of all. The damage is much worse also! He/she can be laughed at or become an annoyance to the whole class. If they are laughed at then the student really becomes a slave to the whole classes Yetzer HaRah. This is very sad because everyone loses. The only real gain is a moment of laughter. So much time is wasted trying to entertain the class.

It may seem "fun" to the student who calls out with nothing to say except an occasional silly comment. He/she becomes nothing more than a "court jester-a clown". The class doesn't really care about the student. They just want to be entertained. When the entertainment stops or becomes boring than the student is left alone without a friend. This is really sad. It is also very common If we want to have friends we must be a good friend ourselves. Real friends help each other do Mitzvos, not the opposite.
