BEGINNING WITH THE RIGHT SIDE BEFORE THE LEFT SIDE
Many of the most important mitzvos are done with the right hand, for
example: bringing korbonos, and the mitzvah of chalitzah. Also, the Torah was
given at Har Sinai with the right hand. Many people also seem to choose their right
side over their left side.
From this we learn, that when you put on clothing, the clothes should be put
on the right side first - right sleeve first and then the left sleeve, right pants-leg first
and then the left pants-leg, right sock first and then the left sock is put on. With
shoes, the right shoe should be put on first and then the left shoe should be put on;
but the left shoe should first be tied and then the right shoe should be tied. We do
the same when buttoning shirts - after the sleeves are put on, the left cuff is
buttoned before the right cuff. When taking shoes off, the left shoe should be taken
off before the right shoe.
